The Realm of Eld is a chaotic one. Countries are divided by internal strife and civil wars. It's a dog-eat-dog world where loyalty is a fleeting thing. Loyalties change mostly depending on how much people can pay. Even the honorable Knights of Eld, a group of people recruited from all 'good' races, trained in warfare, with the purpose of bringing peace to the world, have been corrupted by greed, and fight to claim their own territories. Of course, such a thing is difficult, with the countries in this world.
There is Panthros, ruled by the Elven King and Queen. They are the only ones who have been able to keep their country completely united against the foes outside the borders. The Elves are experts with the bow and arrow, great tacticians, and very in tune with nature. Their society is a kind and peaceful one, and they are never ones to turn away strangers.
The human king Anduryn of Kattarn has been in darkness for years, ever since his first wife died, along with his son. His country, once divided, has only just begun to pull itself together after Anduryn was brought out of his darkness. The humans of Kattarn are very divided. Most of them are very greedy, and the country is very different from the neighboring Panthros. Due to the king's neglect, many villages are very poor, and many of them suffer daily bandit raids.
Kaz Kazan, the Dwarf lands, is also divided, after the death of King Wepwennium III, at the hands of his brother, Pin. Pin never got to claim the throne, however, as Wepwennium was the only one keeping the country united. With the king dead, everyone of stature raced to claim their own piece of land and expand it. The Dwarves are a solitary people. They prefer to dwell in their mountains, mining for precious stones and metals, rather than involving themselves in the happenings of the outside world.
The Dark Lands, on the other hand, is a rather strange place. To an outsider, it looks like the most volatile, most dangerous place in the world, where no one has any loyalty to anyone, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In truth, deep within the Dark Lands, in a high, pitch-black tower, the Dark Lord Dagalûr rules over the Dark Lands and all the creatures within. Up until now, no one has ever even heard of Dagalûr, but rumor has spread about his existence, and about how he is the reason for all the strife in the once peaceful world, how his spies had slipped in everywhere, planting seeds of doubt and paranoia in the heads of the leaders. There is also rumor that Dagalûr was the one who sent assassins to kill King Anduryn's wife and son.
The Northern Lands, located to the far north of the world, near the Northern Frost Plains, is a snow-covered land ruled by a High King. The people there are hardy and stay out of the affairs of the outside world, save for the few who travel to and from the lands outside the Northern Lands, such as traders, adventurers, and mercenaries.
The country of Essra is a great Empire. Although it has only three major cities, this is enough to earn it great fame, due to the sheer sizes of the cities, and due to the people within them. The city most responsible for Essra's fame is Portolo, the city that houses the greatest warriors in the world. The Essrans are generally a peaceful people. Although they possess the finest warriors, they would rather choose to settle things peacefully. They are not, however, above settling disputes with force.
The life of a mercenary is the best possible life in the Realm of Eld. No firm loyalties, and only working for those who can pay for it, no matter who it is, because those in power today may be without it tomorrow, and at that point, it would be prudent to get away as fast as possible.
